ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This charcoal and graphite study depicts an ancient sweet chestnut tree in England, believed to be more than 400 years old.

As these extraordinary trees grow over centuries, their trunks can develop a distinctive twisting structure. The grain spirals as the tree expands, helping distribute the immense physical stresses created by heavy limbs, the crown and wind loads. As the trunk continues to grow, the outer bark cracks and twists with it, creating the extraordinary textures seen in this tree.

It was those textures that first attracted me to the subject..

I loved the complexity of the bark and the challenge of translating its twisting forms, cracks, grain and immense sense of age into charcoal and graphite..

The drawing took approximately 100 hours to complete — and I loved every minute of it.
