ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This charcoal and graphite study captures the pōhutukawa at the entrance to Moturiki Island—a familiar tree in one of my favourite places. Having included it in several paintings, I wanted to give it a study of its own, exploring its character through line, tone and texture.
The tangled roots, partly hidden rocks and contrasting surfaces made this a challenging and deeply enjoyable subject to draw. Working in charcoal, graphite and carbon pencil allowed me to explore the small details that make this tree so distinctive.

Every fighter reaches a time when they must reconcile their passion for their sport with the toll it takes on their body. I trained long after my professional fighting career was over, but there comes a time when you need to accept things need to change. This picture was all about coming to terms with that time for me.
This hyperrealsitic portrait was completed with a range of charcoal, carbon and graphite pencils.
Picture dimensions: 25 × 37 inches (635 × 940 mm
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I lived in Thailand for a few years and spent time visiting many of the beautiful temples there. Traditionally, young men or boys enter the monkhood for a short period—anywhere from a few weeks during school breaks or the rainy retreat season, up to a few months.
This piece shows young boys entering monkhood. Cutting the novice’s hair and eyebrows is a purification ritual that symbolizes detachment from worldly vanity.
Drawn in pastel pencils.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
On my travels in Thailand I stayed in several temples. This image comes from Suan Mokkh Temple and the picture shows a Monk drying his robe. The way the light shone through the robe fascinated me. I made several attempts to capture the scene and finally got close to what I wanted with pastel layered over a watercolour base.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I often trek through the forests of New Zealand and enjoy the sights and sounds along the way. This picture was inspired by the sound of a tiny stream in the forest. It’s about sitting by a stream, resting, and taking in the peace and quiet of the moment.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This picture is from a woodland scene in the Lake District in England, just below Helvellyn next to Lake Thirlmere. I often passed this spot on one of my favourite walks and wondered what this remnant of a wall was doing in the middle of a remote wood.
It’s an oil painting — I wanted it to ‘smell’ of the damp green moss.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I live at Tanners Point and often walk in the harbour at low tide. I came across this old broken-down hide just at the edge of the mangroves. After painting the scene I showed it to a neighbour, and it turned out his son had built it many years ago and the painting clearly brought back fond memories. It was such a good story that I gave him the original — but prints are still available.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Out on a fishing trip from Port Charles, Coromandel (NZ), I came across these two majestic rocks. The rock texture, the blue sea, and the way the light worked were fascinating. I used watercolours, gouache, and coloured pencils to capture the scene.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I was returning from a fishing trip just as the light was dipping over Whangarei Heads, with Bream Head silhouetted against the sky. The subtle range of dark colours against the light background in this backlit scene was captivating, and I just had to paint it.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I captured this one on an early morning stroll on a beach in New Zealand. I took reference photographs and made a few colour notes, but knowing these would never do the scene justice, I started painting as soon as I got home.
The painting was completed in oil paint, building up layers of colour and texture over time.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This charcoal and graphite study depicts an ancient tree in England.
England is home to thousands of ancient trees, many concentrated in historic royal forests, ancient wood pastures, and quiet churchyards. These ancient trees stand today as living, breathing witnesses to centuries of English history.
As a subject for artists, ancient trees are both fascinating and challenging and just so much fun to draw. The drawing took around 100 hours.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This charcoal and graphite study depicts an ancient sweet chestnut tree in England, believed to be more than 400 years old.
As these extraordinary trees grow over centuries, their trunks can develop a distinctive twisting structure. The grain spirals as the tree expands, helping distribute the immense physical stresses created by heavy limbs, the crown and wind loads. As the trunk continues to grow, the outer bark cracks and twists with it, creating the extraordinary textures seen in this tree.
It was those textures that first attracted me to the subject.
I loved the complexity of the bark and the challenge of translating its twisting forms, cracks, grain and immense sense of age into charcoal and graphite.
The drawing took approximately 100 hours to complete — and I loved every minute of it.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This charcoal and graphite study is a view of the pine trees at Ongare Point in New Zealand. New Zealand has no true native pine trees but has widely grown introduced pine species and native conifers that locals often call "pines."
The gnarled bark and variety of tree textures were a delight to draw. I did several studies on-site and finished the drawing in my studio.
